According to a new study, over half of COVID-19 patients who return to the emergency department within two weeks of discharge require hospital readmission. Respiratory complications were the most common cause for the return visit.
Compared to their peers who did not return to the hospital after discharge, these individuals had higher rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and hypertension. Readmission also was linked to shorter length of stay during their initial visit. Additionally, the study data suggests an association between absence of in-hospital treatment-dose anticoagulation during the initial admission and a return to the hospital after discharge. The study authors detected no different in the race/ethnicity for patients who didn’t return to the hospital versus those who were readmitted.
Authors suggest the importance of further study because hospital readmissions for COVID-19 patients may exacerbate the burden on healthcare facilities that are already stretched beyond capacity. “As the evolution of COVID-19 remains uncertain, characterization of the clinical course of patients who re-present after discharge is important with potential to inform discharge planning and post-discharge care,” they concluded.
